Santana Opts Out Of The WBC…..

New York Mets ace Johan Santana will not participate in this years World Baseball Classic. As I wrote in a previous post, I don’t believe the WBC is good for baseball. Now that Santana won’t pitch in this event, it strengthens my feeling even more.

If Bud Selig wants a true “Olympic Style” tournament to decide which country has the best baseball team, then everyone needs to participate. What Bud Selig has right now is baseball’s version of the NFL’s Pro Bowl. An exhibition event where some players will make the trip and others will decline. An event where star players back out by the minute. An event that owners would rather not see their players participate in.

Brandon Webb, Johan Santana, Josh Beckett, Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, Cole Hamels, Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay are all not participating in this year WBC. These are some of the best, if not the best pitchers in the game. How can this tournament have any meaning when the 2 Cy Young award winners from the previous season are not playing?

Until there comes a day when ALL of the top players participate in the World Baseball Classic, it will just be a meaningless exhibition… the Pro Bowl
