Hochevar Should Be Called Up….

I am going to just come out and say it….The Royals need to release Sidney Ponson. How they can keep sending this guy to the mound every 5 days is beyond me. Ponson has started 3 games this year and is 0-2 with a 7.04 era and 10 BB, 10 K’s, a .317 BAA in 15.1 IP. Why can the Royals afford to release Ponson? Because Luke Hochevar who was the #1 overall pick in 2006 is pitching well in Triple A.

I agree with the Royals having Hochevar starting the season in the minors. Hochevar was rushed to the majors in 06 & 07 and some work in the minors I think was needed. In Triple A Hochevar is 3-0 with a 1.89 era and 9 K’s in 19 IP. His peripherals aren’t great, (9 K’s in 19 IP) but I will take 1.89 era and Hochevar’s history suggests he has never been a strikeout pitcher.

With Gordon and Guillen out with injuries, more often than not the Royals will struggle to score runs and the they need their pitching to carry them through this. Greinke, Meche and Davies give the Royals a chance to win everyday, while Ponson does not. Now I am not suggesting Hochevar is going to pitch like Greinke or even Meche for that matter, but he certainly will give the Royals a better chance to win than Ponson.
