Whatcha Gonna Do…

…..When Carl Crawford runs wild on you? Well, apparently if you are the Red Sox, nothing. Crawford ran all over the Red Sox in the recent 4 game series, highlighted by a major league record tying 6 stolen base effort in Sunday’s 5-3 victory over the Rays division rival. For the 4 game series Crawford was 8-16 with 4 runs scored and 9 stolen bases. That’s dominance my friends.

After an injury plagued 2008 where Crawford was limited to just 109 games, Crawford has gotten off to a nice start in 2009. Through 26 games, Crawford is hitting .317/0/11 with 16 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. I always believed Crawford was the best athlete in baseball. He was offered a scholarship to play point guard at UCLA and to play running back at Nebraska, but he was drafted in the 2nd round by the Rays and decided to pursue his baseball career. That is unreal!!! He was offered scholarships to play 2 of the most premier positions in college sports (Nebraska was still a powerhouse at the time). Just for the hell of it, he should have tried to get a scholarship to play center for the Boston University hockey team.

Maybe this is the year that Crawford breaks out and has a signature year? His best year was perhaps 2007 when he hit .315/11/80 with 9 triples and 50 stolen bases. I always thought Crawford had a Ricky Henderson-like season of .325/20/80 with 120 runs scored, 10 triples and 70 sb’s in him. Crawford is only 27 so it’s possible his best years are ahead of him.

It will be interesting to see how this year plays out for Crawford and the Rays as the Rays have a club option for $10MM on Crawford for 2010. But right now Crawford is running wild and there is nobody who can stop him.
