Washington Nationals Officially Name Mike Rizzo GM

I think one of the hardest jobs in sports is to be an interim or acting anything – General Manager, Coach, or Manager. In sports interim or acting nine times out ten means “We like you, but we will probably like someone better at the end of the year.”

For an interim or acting coach, it’s very difficult because a lot of players won’t respect a coach or manager who won’t be there for the long haul. An interim or acting GM is asked to shape the course of the franchise, but not really.

I have the utmost respect for anyone who can work under those conditions. I know I would have a difficult time if I was named an interim sales manager at my company.

Mike Rizzo was asked to work under these conditions and the earned the respect of myself and everyone around baseball by doing a phenomenal job under some pretty tough conditions as Washington Nationals’ acting General Manager.

Rizzo was able to get rid of malcontent Lastings Milledge, he got prospects back for Nick Johnson who is a free agent at the end of the year, he improved the defense by acquiring Nyjer Morgan, and most importantly he was instrumental in signing first round picks Stephen Strasburg and Drew Storen.

Yesterday, the Nationals rewarded Rizzo removed “acting” from his job title and gave him the new one of Senior Vice President and General Manager.

Well done Mr. Rizzo, well done.
