San Diego Padres Fire GM Kevin Towers

It’s been a bad day so far for baseball GM’s.

First, it was JP Ricciardi getting the ax in Toronto this morning and now it is Kevin Towers.

The San Diego Padres announced today they will not bring back Towers as GM in 2010. Towers has spent 14 seasons as the Padres’ GM and they have won four division titles and made one World Series appearance (1998) under his stewardship.

CEO Jeff Moorad has called a press conference today at 2:00 PT to announce the move.

The only question I have is — how fast is Towers going to get another job if he wants to work next year? One second? Maybe two seconds?

Towers can be the GM of my team any day of the week and twice on Sunday. He knows how to get the job done.

Did Towers make some mistakes? Sure, every GM does. There hasn’t been a GM in the history of sports that has a 100 percent track record.

But considering that Towers had to deal with the utter nonsense that is the Padres ownership situation — the bottom line is that Towers did more good than bad in San Diego.

This is a huge mistake by an organization whose been more dysfunctional the two years than the Kardashians.

Look for Arizona Diamondbacks executive Jerry DiPoto to be the frontrunner to replace Towers.
